After having first earned critical acclaim during their performance in the
"First Choruses of the World Festival" at the Lincoln Center in New York
(1969), MADZ has been the only choir to have ever twice won the exclusive
European Grand Prix in AREZZO (last in 2007). In summer
2009 these stellar
singers completed a 7-week Goodwill Tour through Germany, Italy, France
and Belgium, and after a brief pause continued on another 8 week
Concert Tour though the USA.
During their Tour
Koďchiro Matsuura, the Director-General of
UNESCO, awarded
MADZ the distinction of being "Artists
for Peace". It went “in recognition of their efforts
to promote dialogue and understanding among peoples in Southeast Asia,
their contribution to extend UNESCO’s message of peace and tolerance,
and their dedication to the ideals and aims of the Organization."
In the past years this award also went to the Berlin
Philharmonic Orchestra, the pianist Lang-Lang, singer Nana Mouskouri, actor Sir Roger
Moore, soprano Sumi Jo and singer Harry Belafonte, just to name a few.
